As many of you are aware, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid took to the floor of the Senate on Monday, and compared the opponents of health care reform to supporters of slavery. “Instead of joining us on the right side of history, all the Republicans can come up with is, ’slow down, stop everything, let’s start over,’ said Reid.” “If you think you’ve heard these same excuses before, you’re right. When this country belatedly recognized the wrongs of slavery, there were those who dug in their heels and said ’slow down, it’s too early, things aren’t bad enough.’” “When women spoke up for the right to speak up, they wanted to vote, some insisted they simply, slow down, there will be a better day to do that, today isn’t quite right.” “When this body was on the verge of guaranteeing equal civil rights to everyone regardless of the color of their skin, some senators resorted to the same filibuster threats that we hear today.” Senator Reid should take a few minutes to go back and study the anti-slavery and Civil Rights movements of our nation. It was the Republican Party, led by such great men as Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass, that led the anti-slavery movement in America. It was with the support of the Republican Party that the filibuster of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was ended, and the bill was brought to the floor for vote. The historic legislation then passed the Senate with 82 percent of the Republicans voting for the measure while only 69 percent of the Democrats voted for the bill. Reid, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, and the White House are willing to go to any length to see that one-sixth of our nation’s economy is hijacked and put under their control. Desperate times call for desperate measures, and the liberals are desperate beyond measure. Senator Reid himself is among the many Democrats who will be looking for new employment next year when the American voters turn this tide of Liberalism and Marxism that is the current trend in our nation’s capital. These incumbents like Reid will not stop until they have kidnapped our liberty. While the left is trying to quickly jam this bill through to President Obama’s desk, I think we need to take the advice of the aforementioned Mr. Douglass, “A battle lost or won is easily described, understood, and appreciated, but the moral growth of a great nation requires reflection, as well as observation, to appreciate it.” The moral quandary surrounding the use of fuzzy math to justify this expansive bill grows daily. Senator Max Baucus (D-MT), namesake of the Senate bill, stated in floor debate that “Let’s put the ‘Doc Fix’ off to the side… the ten year number… either it’s a trillion dollars, or it’s 2.5 trillion dollars, depending on when you start (counting).” Health-care is one of the most significant, personal issues facing the American people today. To put this system in the hands of our bumbling, over-zealous government bureaucracy would be the greatest mistake we’ve made in at least half a century. |
